Unlicensed Specials

Unlicensed Specials – Medicines made by manufacturers under a “Specials” licence. In the UK it is expected that medicines, being supplied and available to the public have been subject to clinical trials and hold marketing authorisation or a license that has been granted by the MHRA (Medicines & Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency). The use of licensed medicines protects and maximizes patients’ safety and minimizes potential liability.

However, sometimes there are no suitable licensed products available for a patient’s specific clinical need and there are times when Unlicensed Medicines (ULM) are prescribed & dispensed.

Pharmacy staff regularly obtain and supply unlicensed ‘special’ medicines. However, compared to licensed medicines there are less well-defined parameters for the safe and effective use of ULM’s and have been associated with increased risks.

Testimonials

“Really enjoyed the training session over the last 3 days, John was a great presenter who did really well considering he had an audience from all over the UK…infact the world! I’m sure the face to face/classroom style presentation would have been more interactive as I certainly missed being able to bounce off others but this is no fault of John or the course contents. Learned so much from the past few days, more than I actually realised that I would. Thank you!”  February 2021… Read more
