This may include reviewing patient information materials, evaluating whether current storage recommendations remain sufficiently robust under projected climate conditions, and exploring how seasonal messaging could be incorporated into routine patient communications.
There is also an opportunity to better understand real-world storage conditions. Advances in environmental monitoring, digital health technologies and real-world evidence could provide valuable insights into how medicines are actually stored across different housing types and climatic conditions, helping to inform future regulatory and product development strategies.
Pharmacy Has a Critical Role to Play
Pharmacy professionals remain uniquely positioned at the interface between medicines and patients.
Research consistently suggests that patients are willing to follow professional advice regarding medicines storage, yet relatively few report receiving routine guidance. This represents a missed opportunity for medicines optimisation.
Incorporating practical storage advice into routine consultations—particularly during periods of extreme heat—could become an increasingly valuable component of pharmaceutical care. Such interventions require minimal additional resource while supporting medicine quality, treatment effectiveness and patient confidence.
Looking Ahead
Climate resilience is rapidly becoming a strategic priority across healthcare. For the pharmaceutical industry, resilience should not end when a medicine leaves the distribution network.
As domestic environments become warmer, the assumptions underpinning long-standing storage guidance deserve renewed scrutiny. Ensuring medicines remain within appropriate environmental conditions throughout their full lifecycle will require collaboration between manufacturers, regulators, healthcare providers and pharmacy teams.
The conversation around climate change in pharmaceuticals is evolving. Alongside decarbonisation and sustainable manufacturing, adaptation must become part of the industry’s strategic agenda.
