The Royal Pharmaceutical Society have just released Medicines, Ethics and Practice Edition 46 – July 2023.
As well as the usual updates, one of the most significant changes is to how pharmacists can access the publication.
This year the Medicines, Ethics and Practice Edition 46 – July 2023 was offered as a print version or as a fully searchable, digital version to pharmacist members of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society.
There are numerous updates that can be found in Chapter 1 – Changes to this edition on pages 8 and 9 of the Medicines, Ethics and Practice Edition 46 – July 2023.
Of particular note is the updated link to the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons website FAQ section regarding “Can I advise that a client use over the counter human medicines for their animal?” (section 3.5.2).
OTC human licensed meds can only be used for animals if prescribed by a veterinary practitioner ‘under the cascade’. This does not cover verbal instruction from a veterinary practitioner to purchase an over the counter human licensed medicines.
Pharmacists and other pharmacy professionals involved in the sale of OTC remedies (legal categories GSL and P) are reminded that these medicines are not licensed for sale for the treatment of animals and are not always interchangeable with animal licensed medicines for the same active substance.
