Selling and buying medicines online – do you know what you are looking for?

Since the 1st of July 2015, all websites that sell medicines via an online system must display the EU common logo as seen below:

The logo is generic across all EU member states, the Flag as shown above represents the country of origin for the website. Members of public will be able to click the logo which connects to the register of online sellers, this will inform the public instantly if the website is legitimate.

Why do you need it?

  • Patient safety
  • One of the methods taken to prevent falsified medicines reaching the supply chain
  • Patient level recognition
  • Legitimate sources clearly identifiable

What action is required?

  • Register on the MHRA portal: https://pclportal.mhra.gov.uk/
  • Display the logo on every webpage that sells medicines, this includes any third party websites
  • Link your website to the public register of online sellers
  • Display the MHRA contact details including their website

Suspect website?

  • Check the register: http://medicine-seller-register.mhra.gov.uk/
  • If the website is not registered or not active (and selling medicines) Inform the MHRA via the link on the register webpage
  • If you want to view the full list type ‘%’ as the company name
