Covid-19 Vaccine – Are you ready ?

Pharmacies will be able to administer the Covid-19 vaccines when they are available. To facilitate this, the Human Medicines Regulations updates became effective on the 16th of October. These updates allow pharmacies to administer unlicensed Covid-19 vaccines. The Department of Health and Social Care said national protocols would be determined with regard to who can actually administer the vaccines.

Currently, the Patient Group Directives do not allow technicians to administer vaccines, and this has not changed. However, the role of the technician within the pharmacy will be enhanced with the new regulatory framework. The new protocols, robust training and peer support will strengthen the role of pharmacy technicians, and allow them to administer the vaccines. Before proceeding, Technicians should check their indemnity insurance to ensure that they are covered.
