What have we learned in ten years? I was a pharmacist in retail practice in 2009 and was a site that collected all the unused Tamiflu which ended up being destroyed having cost billions across the world. When medicines are hyped up on limited clinical evidence there is often a follow up by the regulators to limit the use to prevent patient harm. The pandemic panic, press, social media and drug companies have a part to play but even in a pandemic evidence-based medicine is a must and the public and health professionals deserve to be informed after a full independent review of clinical trials. If we are not careful pharma warehouses will be full of unwanted medicines as in 2009.
Tamiflu in 2009 and Remdesivir in 2019 and what will be the next wonder drug?
