Data, Privacy and Cloud Storage

In a recent Government tender for a report on the National Medical Stockpile, the Government has stated that all data must remain within the boundaries of Australia.  National security was cited as the main issue.  Therefore, tenderers would need to consider where their data is stored including cloud storage.

All that aside, this sparks an interesting discussion about where your own data is stored.  That is, in your own business, in other people’s business and is your data secure.  Do you know? I have no idea.

Now I’m sure Australia is not the only country enforcing such data security measures yet how can you be sure where your data is stored? And how secure it is?

What system does your business use? Does your data provider store within national boundaries?

What restrictions do you have to work within or comply to?

Where is the magic cloud located?

Some food for thought.  Find out the answers and be aware of the regulations.  Play it safe.
