Calling All Care Quality Commission (CQC) providers

Are you a Care Quality Commission (CQC) provider? Are you aware the training requirements for your staff members have changed?

From July 2022 the Health and Care Act 2022 has introduced a training requirement for staff members who carry out regulated activities and are registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

All staff members will be required to undergo training specifically relating to interaction with a service user who has a learning disability or autism. The training must be appropriate to the role they carry out.

The CQC inspectors will be looking for staff and service use interactions, evidence of staff training and support to ensure understanding as well as an assessment of competency. The CQC has stipulated that the content of the training will not be reviewed. The CQC has updated the statutory guidance for Regulation 18: Staffing to reflect the change.

The government is currently developing a code of practice to reflect the change which will include the content, delivery and ongoing evaluation of the training which must be provided. As the code of practice will require public consultation the government estimates that publication may take 12 months.

The standardised training package being developed has been named the Oliver Mcgowan Mandatory Training after Oliver Mcgowan whose death has shone a light on the need for better training for those service users with hidden disabilities. The training has been trialling across the health and care sector during 2021. Currently being reviewed to see if elements of the training can be rolled out prior to the code of practice publication.
