The Department of Transport is going to run a limited Multi-Modal 48 tonne freight trial. The current maximum weight is 44 tonnes.

The consultation will consider how a trial of these heavier vehicles could be implemented and evaluated. It outlines how operators can submit expressions of interest if they would like to take part in the trial.

This trial will make better use of rail freight and will allow six-axle articulated lorries to run at 48 tonnes by specific operators.
