As PCTs cannot currently refuse exempt pharmacy contract applications, except when there are LPS services (Local Pharmaceutical services) being provided in the neighbourhood, they seem to be looking for alternative ways to ward off such applications.
A customer of mine has been asked, as anticipated, a number of questions about how his proposed Internet Pharmacy will deliver essential services remotely.
In particular the PCT have requested additional information concerning SOPs submitted on the handling of dispensed cool chain items and the handling of Controlled Drugs.
Clearly the submission of detailed SOPs demonstrate to a PCT that the applicant has thought through the details of their proposed services before applying, and avoids giving the PCT an opportunity to ask delaying questions.
As most PCTs Pharmacy Subcommittees only meet once a month, each time the PCT asks applicants questions, the applicant by definition has to wait at least another month before being able to open their exempt pharmacy
