You may have just purchased or need to purchase a new fridge suitable for pharmacy or wholesaling.  Here are some tips to help settle in the new fridge and get the most out of your new piece of equipment.

Tips and hints to settle in your new fridge

  • Remove all packaging and send off the guarantee
  • Choose the right location, avoid direct sunlight, drafts, and sources of heat such as a radiator.
  • Ensure the ambient temperature is within the range that the fridge is designed to operate within which is usually stated on the data plate inside the cabinet. Class SN is 10 to 32 degrees for example.
  • Ensure the air can circulate all  around the fridge
  • Ensure it is  level and also let it stand for a couple of hours before you switch it  on
  • Clean it  regularly but  make sure you  switch it  off first , you  may have to  plan alternative storage for your cold chain products
  • Soapy water and a soft cloth can be used to clean the magnetic seals
  • Ensure that the drainage hole is not blocked
  • Defrost your fridge regularly, especially if it does not have a defrost cycle
  • A soft brush attachment for your vacuum cleaner can be used to clean the condenser
  • DO not over fill the fridge and aim for a maximum of 75% and allow the air to circulate around all the products
  • Ensure that the temperature control is set to keep the fridge within temperature limits required by the medication.  Alarms should be set taking into account the accuracy of the temperature logger.
  • If it is a manual reading which is taken it should be taken twice daily, first thing in the morning and in the evening.
  • Remember to have your fridge mapped and to place vulnerable products in the safest part of the fridge.
  • When the fridge has reached the end of its life check the manufacturer’s recommendations to ensure that you dispose of it in a safe manner.
