Inclisiran – A Cholesterol lowering Injection has been made available to save the lives of thousands of NHS Patients. Thanks to a world-leading NHS ‘Population Health Agreement’ between the NICE, the NHS and Novartis for Inclisiran, a revolutionary new treatment for high cholesterol, has been added to the list of options available for NHS patients to control their cholesterol levels.
Patients with a history of cardiovascular disease and high cholesterol are set to benefit from this lifesaving drug which will initially be made available for 300,000 patients over the next three years, however, this figure could rise to almost half a million patients beyond this period. Through the use of RNA interference, the treatment assists in boosting the ability of the liver to remove harmful cholesterol, specifically LDL-C, from the blood.
Nurses in GP surgeries across England will be able to administer Inclisiran as an injection meaning patients can avoid regular hospital visits. After an initial dose, the drug will be administered again after three months and then twice a year. The treatment can also be used alongside statins, adding to the list of possible options available to NHS Patients in order to help reduce or control their Cholesterol Levels. It is estimated that it could prevent 55,000 heart attacks and strokes and save 30,000 lives within the next 10 years.
At the end of August, the NHS England announced that free blood pressure checks, at high-street pharmacies, will be offered to all UK English Citizens aged 40 and over. This will aid in the prevention of thousands of strokes and heart attacks and save an estimated 2,000 lives.
Statistics from the NHS England show that more than two in five people in England have high cholesterol and around 6.5 million adults currently using lipid-lowering drugs such as statins in England.
