Childhood eczema is the most common inflammatory skin disease and affects around 20% of children in the United Kingdom.
Atopic eczema cannot be cured, but there are many ways of controlling it. The current NICE guidance on atopic eczema in children outlines that the basis of treatment is emollients and topical corticosteroids, which most healthcare professionals are familiar with. However, if the child’s eczema becomes severely flared, nurses may use bandaging or whole-body occlusive dressings such as vests and leggings. Recently, new bandaging materials have been developed which, when incorporated into clothing, can control temperature and humidity close to the skin thereby reducing itch and irritation. Studies have shown that such new materials can mean that children’s eczema flares are less severe and less frequent, meaning fewer GP appointments and fewer hospital referrals.
