As of January 2016, the EU voted to lift certain restrictions and trade embargoes on Iran.  Whilst pharmaceuticals and other items related to health were not heavily restricted, it has resulted in more business opportunities in the Iranian markets.

So, what do you need to know about shipping pharmaceuticals to Iran?

Firstly, since the 1979 Iranian Revolution, the government implemented a more self-sufficient program to produce many generic pharmaceuticals within Iran.  The trade embargoes implemented assisted this program and helped to save millions of dollars for the healthcare system.

Due to this self-reliance, there is stiff competition from local manufacturers, and many regulations to adhere to for approving drugs for the Iranian market.  Even with approved drugs, Customs clearance procedures can be time consuming and many documents are required.

Whilst many restrictions have been lifted there are still restrictions on financial transactions and many financial institutions in the UK and EU still reject payments to and from Iran.  Always remember to check with your bank prior to conducting business with Iranian customers and suppliers to ensure the banks will accept and send payments.

Many airlines have now resumed flights into Tehran which is of great benefit for those looking for transport routes.  Just ensure you pick a transport provider that knows the area well, can assist with temperature controls (if needed), and has a full understanding of the regulations and Customs procedures for clearance.
