Come on all you pharmacists and technicians , this is a great chance for you to really help the RPS to improve the quality resources for pharmacy and help other time pressed pharmacists to improve their standards and systems in their practice.
I help pharmacy wholesalers to develop quality management systems and encourage them to live and breath their SOPs. All to often in pharmacy due to time pressures SOPs are sent down from head office signed and put on the shelf and forgotten.
Pharmacists and their staff religiously read and record the fridge temperatures once or twice a day but what do they do if their is a deviation ? Most would do nothing, record it, reset the thermometer and carry on ? Change the thermometer it must be broken? Do they even know what they should do, is there a SOP to tell them ? Do they know that storing a cold chain product out with the marketing authority holders recommendation renders the product ” Unlicensed ” Do they know that domestic fridges have defrost cycles and temperature ranges of zero to ten degrees? Cold chain medication must be kept between 2 and 8 degrees.
What would happen if the insulin had frozen and is in a pen so you cannot see the insulin and it is dispensed, used and does not work?
It could be your child or parent one day?
All healthcare professionals are responsible for the quality of the service and care they provide. The culture must be transparent , learning, patient and quality centred. The QMS must be lead by the top and filter through the organisation however small to ensure that patients receive the best quality of care
