In good news for the UK Health economy, the Government last week published a draft policy to allow medical devices and IVDs that have been approved in certain other countries quicker access to the UK market. The UK already recognises devices approved in the EU (CE marked devices) but this would extend this mutual recognition to device approved in Australia, Canada and the US. This will speed up the process for registering new devices in the UK to the benefit of patients. However, it is likely to be seen as a threat for UK manufacturers who will see reduced barriers to entry into the UK market and increase competition, though this limited list of countries is unlikely to create significant downward pressure on prices.
