Patient Safety- NICE guidelines on Managing Drug Allergies

Startling statistics show that as many as 15% of patients have their hospital stays increased due to adverse drug reactions. Serious drug reactions are increasing and some could be avoided by checking with patients if they are allergic to any medication.

At first read of the first ever NICE guidelines on managing drug allergies, it makes perfect sense, however, surely their GP or prescriber who is sitting in front of the patient and also has access to their notes should ask this question before they prescribe the medication?

It can be more difficult for an A & E department if they do not have access to a full patient history and they have to act quickly.

There is a need for pharmacists to be working in more areas of the NHS in collaboration with the prescriber to minimise the risk of adverse drug reactions  ADRs
