The MHRA has written to all WDL holders to clarify the position following a recent case brought against the MHRA where the judge ruled that the law prohibits the purchase of medicines from pharmacies that do not have WDLs by pharmacies with the WDLs. All other pharmacies, which will be the vast majority, are unaffected and can continue to engage in limited exchange of stock in the usual way.
The MHRA reiterated
“License holders are reminded that it is a condition of the license that they must obtain supplies of medicines only from licensed manufacturers or other licensed wholesale dealers. Any license holder who breaches this condition faces regulatory action, which may include license suspension.”
MHRA has begun a targeted program of inspections and the consequences of non-compliance will be serious. The MHRA has issued
their case referral telephone number (020 7084 2330) and e mail [email protected] and any RP will be held accountable.
