In the developing countries, poor healthcare infrastructure and a high demand for medicines has led to a proliferation of criminal gangs specialising in the counterfeiting of drugs. In the UK there have been several incidents of falsified medicines entering the NHS supply chain.

As part of their duty of care, holders of WDA(H) should:

*    Only order from ‘Bona Fide’ suppliers by undertaking rigorous checks to ensure they are licensed
*    Train staff to look for differences in packaging and the physical characteristics of product (look, feel and smell)
*    Ensure goods are transported securely to prevent diversion and subsequent replacement with falsified medicines
*    Be cautious of cheap deals on offer
