European Union (EU)/European Economic Area (EEA) qualified Pharmacist and new to the UK?

by | Apr 6, 2016 | Blog

We have a wealth of EU/EEA pharmacists working in the UK, who have obtained a recognised pharmacy degree and qualified as pharmacists within their country of birth. They are a valuable asset to the profession.

The General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) manages applications to allow entry on the GPhC Pharmacist register to allow EU/EEA qualified pharmacists to practice in the UK.

But is only one of the first steps in the process of having experience to actually working in a UK pharmacy.

From experience working practices are very different in each EU/EEA country with a bigger divide between Northern Europe and Southern Europe so how to make the change to a new way of working.

Some EU/EEA pharmacists volunteer to help in a community pharmacy to gain experience. In many cases this can be at a low rate of pay or free of charge.

Pharmacy Consulting Ltd (PCL) have helped and supported EU/EEA pharmacists with roles in pharmacy.

For additional support PCL now offer one-day Responsible Pharmacist (RP) training courses to support the familiarisation with the UK way of working. It also allows discussion on some new topics which will effect the Profession in the UK in the near future.

The training will not only give you a view of working in the UK, it may give a broader perspective of pharmacy if you already work in the UK.

Further the training will help support any applications for pharmacy roles you may make within the UK.

The Course includes:

  • Pharmacy ethics
  • Role, responsibilities and duties of a Responsible Pharmacist
  • Quality Management Systems (QMS) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP)
  • Pharmacy audits/self-audits/review
  • GPhC inspection
  • NHS terms of service and audit
  • Proposed changes to Standards for pharmacy professionals by the GPhC
  • DH proposals for Hub and Spoke operations and other proposed changes
