Over the past few years there has been a vast change in the Community Pharmacy landscape. Following a 5 year period of flat funding and increasing running costs there has been an increasing number of pharmacies closing their doors permanently, with 1400 closing since 2017.
Pharmacy First officially launched on 1st February 2024 and 95% of pharmacies in England have signed up for the service. Pharmacists will soon have referrals from surgeries and from other sources for patients with sinusitis, sore throat, impetigo, UTIs, earache in Children, shingles and infected insect bites; and will be able to supply antibiotics where indicated.
2253 patient complaints were made against pharmacists working in GP practices in the year ending March 2022 compared to 1521 the previous year. This, according to figures recently published by NHS Digital.
